Mathematics
Developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving
At All Saints, we believe that every child can become a confident mathematician. We develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving together, helping children to understand numbers, recall important facts and calculate accurately, while also encouraging them to explain their thinking, spot patterns, make connections and justify their answers. Children are given regular opportunities to practise and revisit their learning so that important knowledge becomes secure. They are encouraged to try different approaches, persevere when mathematics is challenging and apply what they know to new and unfamiliar situations. Through our Dream, Believe, Achieve ethos, we want every child to develop confidence, curiosity and resilience when learning mathematics.
What pupils develop
Pupils build secure number knowledge, practise efficient methods and explain their reasoning. They apply what they know to unfamiliar problems and learn that mistakes can be a valuable part of successful learning.
Throughout their time at All Saints, children develop a secure understanding of the key areas of mathematics, including number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, percentages, measures and geometry. They build a strong bank of mathematical facts and learn how and when to use different calculation strategies. Children also develop their mathematical vocabulary and become increasingly confident in talking about their ideas and explaining their thinking. Through practical activities, representations, investigations and problem-solving challenges, children learn to recognise patterns and relationships, make connections and apply their mathematical knowledge to everyday and unfamiliar situations. We want our children to see themselves as capable mathematicians who are willing to have a go, learn from mistakes and work independently.

Progression across the school
Concepts are introduced in a clear sequence and revisited regularly, helping pupils connect new learning with what they already understand.
Our Maths curriculum is carefully planned so that children build on their learning and make progress from the Early Years to Year 6. Mastering Number is used alongside our daily Maths lessons to strengthen fluency, develop secure number facts and build automaticity. This gives children a strong foundation from which to explore mathematical ideas in greater depth during their Maths lessons, where they develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge in different contexts. As children progress through the school, they revisit and build on prior learning, becoming increasingly confident and independent mathematicians. Our curriculum is supported by the National Curriculum, NCETM and White Rose, and teachers use assessment to ensure that children receive the support and challenge they need to succeed.
